Darrel Ralph Designs 18-XRAY Auto Custom Prototype Folding Knife (SOLD)
This knife is a custom prototype that Darrel Ralph made for Meyerco's production of the 18-XRay automatic folder. This knife was purchased directly out of Darrel's pocket at the 2006 Blade Show. Since then it has been properly stored and not carried. This knife features a spearpoint, partially serrated, 154CM steel blade that has been DLC coated. The presentation side of the blade is marked "DDR". This is the only prototype that I have seen with this particular mark from Darrel. The handle is made from two pieces of machined, black anodized Aircraft Aluminum. Darrel made at least 10 prototypes of the 18-XRay. The configurations varied by blade finishes, serrations and handle inlays. The knife also features a tip-up mounted black DLC coated pocket clip, that can be reversed to tip-down carry. There is a lanyard hole, as well.
The feature that sets this knife apart from other "push button" automatics that use a torsion spring for opening the blade is Darrel's patented SAS (Slide Auto Safety) firing system. One of the problems with a traditional button is that it can be accidentally pushed when the knife is in your pocket, and thereby fire the knife’s blade to an open or partially open position. The same is true when using the knife in the open position. You can accidently push the button and close the blade on your fingers. The SAS system allows the user to carry the knife in complete safety but still be able to open it with one smooth action of pushing the firing button forward and down. No additional movement is needed to safely lock the blade open. And the same smooth action is employed to close the knife into a safe carrying position - push the firing button forward and down and close the blade.
The blade snaps out with authority - fast, strong and smooth. It locks up tight in the open position, and has good blade seating when closed. This knife is in excellent condition. The DLC coating of the blade has some rubs and hand marks, but no scratches or dings. The pocket clip has a couple of barely perceptible "flea bites". The knife feels great in-hand, and exhibits great ergonomics. There's also some jimping on the blade spine for an enhanced grip and better control of the knife. This is the perfect knife for military and / or law enforcement. It would also serve you well as great heavy-duty, general purpose everyday carry. It will come in a padded zippered case.
