Bill Ruple is a master at making slip joint folders. He has taught and inspired so many knifemakers on how to make folding knives, that it's almost impossible to list them. You have to hold one of Bill's knives to truly appreciate the fit and finish, and his attention to detail. He has been making knives since 1988. The quality of his knives has been consistent throughout his career. He has made knives with from one to six blades. No matter what he makes or what show he attends, he always sells out - and quickly!
This 3-blade Split-Back Canoe Whittler is one of the more challenging builds that Bill makes, and this one has it all! All the blades are dark etched Damascus. The main blade is a Spearpoint grind, and the other two are Pen and Sheepsfoot blades. The design, and the way they fit together requires amazingly tight tolerances. And it is perfect in every way! Each blade has a half-stop, and features Bill's signature walk-and-talk. The front and rear bolsters are 416 stainless steel and are fluted where they meet the scales, as well as the rounded end. The fluting near the scales also has shadow pattern lines above and below. The liners are integral to the bolsters and are file-worked. The 416 SS shield is a beautifully engraved long bar. And there is matching engraving on the center of the backspring. Lastly, the handle scales are two beautiful pieces of fossilized material, with nice color and grains. All the blades lock up tight with no play, and the blade seating is nearly center. Nice comfortable long pull on the main blade and nail nicks on the other blades, with firm yet easy pulls. One previous owner and in excellent condition. Comes in a Ruple padded, zippered case.
