Daniel Keown is the skilled craftsman behind Keown Fine Folders. His passion for knives started from wood carving. Not satisfied with commercially available knives, he set out to build his own knife. As a specialty pipe welder, he built his own belt grinder and the rest is, as they say, history. Building slip-joint knives became his new passion. He has been fortunate to have several mentors as he has fine-tuned his knifemaking. He attributes a great deal to Tom Ploppert, and strives to reach Tom's level of quality.
Of note is the fact that Daniel won Best Custom Slip Joint at this year's Blade Show, for a complex build of a custom traditional Sheffield pattern knife. Daniel is one of those new slip-joint makers to watch!
This is Daniel's Back Pocket, an original Tony Bose design. This slip-joint folding knife features a Bill Poor Feather Damascus blade, A2 spring, Feather Pattern Hand Jigged Bone scales and stainless steel domed pins, shield, lined lanyard hole and bolster integral to the liners. Please take note of Daniel's feather pattern in the jigged bone. It flows with the lines of the pattern in the feather Damascus. This took a great deal of skill and time. You can see the detail in the close-up photos of the scales.
The blade has a nicely cut nail nick, with a smooth and even pull that won't break a nail. The blade has a half-stop, and nice "walk and talk". The blade locks up tight and sits centered between the liners.
The Back Pocket comes with the pictured Keown Fine Folder metal tin with custom cut foam insert and leather lid liner, and metal COA. This knife is new from Daniel at Blade Show 2025.
